9th entry opportunity for some free Ginter

This will probably wrap this thing up.

Here we got with round 9.

So far the hints have been:

1.  It's not a female.

2.  It IS a baseball player.

3.  It is a current major leaguer.

4.  It is an A.L. player.

5.  The subject is NOT in the A.L. East.

6.  The subject is NOT in the A.L. West.

Your hint for this round is that the subject has only been guessed twice today, once in each of the last two rounds.  Only the number hasn't been correct.
Good luck!

Your rules reminder and checklist...

Here's how it will work.

All you have to do is guess the red ink auto hand numbered out of 10 that I pulled from a box of 2013 Allen & Ginter.

1.  You get one guess on this post.

2.  You have to guess the subject AND the numbering out of 10 correctly.  For example, Wolf Blizter 1/10.  (It's not Wolf Blitzer, I'm just watching CNN and he's on so that was the first name that came to mind.)  You must get BOTH the subject and the number to win.  Don't give up yet.  Read # 3.

3.  At the top of each hour I will make another post with some sort of hint and you get another guess.  The hints will help narrow down your choices.

4.  When the new post goes up, I'll close guesses on the previous posts so check back often.

5.  I'll do the top of the hour posts until I get off work at 11 PM Central time tonight.  Hopefully I'll give enough hints that someone will get it before then.  If not, I'll randomize all entrants once for each time they entered and get a winner that way.

6.  The prize will be a 2013 Ginter rack pack (as if a 14 card pack qualifies as a rack pack) and whatever else I choose to throw in.

Here is a checklist of the players and non-players you have to choose from so good luck!

THE NEXT POST WILL BE UP AT 8 PM CENTRAL TIME!

Contest Entry Opportunity #2...Come get some Ginter

Alright, it's time for Contest Entry Opportunity #2.

Due to blogger issues I'm  going to leave the first entry open until the top of the NEXT hour so go back to that one to see the rules, the prize and what this is all about.

You can see that entry HERE.

There will be a hint at the top of the next hour so check back!

EDIT--Blogger is starting to piss me off.

Blogger problems

Is anyone else having Blogger issues?

I have posts that are scheduled to run that sometimes don't post until hours later.

About 45 minutes ago, I posted a contest and it hasn't shown up yet either.

Just wondering if posting this will cause the other to show up.

Contest Time! Come get some Ginter

I'm working 12 hours of overtime today so let's get a contest going.

THE NEXT POST WILL BE UP AT 2PM CENTRAL TIME!

The blogging Community

I'm sure we all have our favorite parts of the blogging community.

Maybe it's the great reading material.  Perhaps it's the trades or just checking out what kind of stuff people are pulling.  For most of us, I know we enjoy the camaraderie with fellow collectors.  It's a little strange, but I think we can develop real friendships with people we've never met and may never get the chance to meet.

I feel that way about a number of bloggers and the guys at Community Gum are at the top of that list.   The CG Boys and I go way back and we've sent cards back and forth for as long as we've been blogging. When you send cards back and forth without the parameters of a trade, that's just fun.

Well, this isn't a trade post.  It's a box break post.  Jon busted boxes of 1996 Finest 1 and 2, 1996 Fleer and 2004 Topps Clubhouse Collection.  I signed up for the Rangers and since things were moving a little slowly, I looked over the remaining teams and decided to help Jon out by picking up one more.  The Clubhouse Collection box had 20 hits in it and I looked over the possibilities.  The Yankees hadn't been picked yet and had the most hits available and some great old HOF'ers so I took them as well.  I sure was glad I did.

I ended up with the Angels and Twins as my random teams as well.

I got plenty of cards that I could have scanned, but I wanted to focus on a few Finest cards and the hits.

I like Finest, but it's one of those things I never buy.  They look better in person.  The scanner didn't like them much.  Does anyone peel these?

I think this photo was taken in Baltimore judging by the people in the dugout.  It must have been cold.

Here's the other Will Clark I got.  I have several dupes of these and lots of the other teams I'll be sending out in packages.

Now, on to the main hits from 2004 Clubhouse Collection.  In case you haven't seen this product before, it's 10 packs with 2 hits per pack.  That's it...all or nothing.  Just remember there were a total of 20 hits available.

I hit one Ranger.  Chan Ho Park, the WORST signing in team history.  Some people would say it's ARod, but at least he put up big PED enhanced numbers while he was a Ranger.  Chan Ho Park got $65 million for 22 wins over 4 years.

My first random team was the Angels.

Here we have a nice Tim Salmon jersey, complete with blue pinstripe.

How about some Hall of Fame mojo?  Reggie, Reggie, Reggie...anyone have a Reggie bar?  I'm hungry.

Now for the other team I picked, the Yankees.  You might be saying, "But you hate the Yankees."  You're right, but I was hoping for some of that aforementioned Hall of Fame mojo.

This is the copper parallel Jorge Posada card, #21/99.

Here is some future Hall of Fame mojo.  Mariano Rivera is a man you have to respect, even if you don't like the damn Yankees.

Here is the Hall of Fame mojo I was hoping for...Lou Gehrig Career Legends bat #153/184.  Most of this will be up for trade, but I'll be holding on to the Gehrig.  It's not every day you get a hit like this one.

Now I have to admit, I did feel a little guilty getting 6 out of the 20 hits, but I've had plenty of box breaks where I got zilch.

Jon, best of luck with all the real life stuff going on and thanks for the great break!

A tale of two plays at the plate

Sometimes catching is fun...

...sometimes, not so much.

Every once in a while, banning collisions at the plate comes up.  I read it again on a blog a couple of days ago.

It won't work.  What do you tell the catcher?  You have to move out of the way.  You can't attempt to tag out the runner.  I know, let's say if the runner gets 2/3 of the way home, he gets a free pass.

That's crap and I can't imagine baseball without the play at the plate.  I suppose they could force players to slide feet first into home instead of lowering a shoulder into the catcher, but I suspect even that wouldn't work.  I guess it's easy for me to love a good play at the plate since I'm not on the receiving end as the runner or the catcher.

1, 2, 3, 4...I declare a pack war

Last month my youngest son and I were reading over some blogs when we came across a couple of bloggers having a pack war.  It was William from Foul Bunt and Drew from Drews Cards.  My son asked what a pack war was and once I explained it, he said he wanted to do it sometime.

Over the weekend, we went to Walmart and I offered to buy a blaster so we could have our own pack war.  He asked if we could both buy a blaster and play for keeps.  Hey, who am I to deny my kid the opportunity to buy cards I can steal from him.  *Maniacal laugh...*

For our pack war, he bought a blaster of Allen & Ginter and I bought a blaster of Bowman Platinum.  Each has 8 packs so we matched up pack for pack.  We decided the best card in each pack (based mostly on my subjective opinion) would win the pack.

Here is a look at how the war went down...

Round 1

Billy Hamilton refractor vs. Brandon Phillips SP mini

I was going to give him the pack because of the SP, but he said shiny was better so Pack 1 goes to me.

Round 2

Yasiel Puig base card vs. Vikings Martial Mastery

We had a brief argument over this one because he kept saying that in a real war, a viking would beat a Puig. Poor naive boy.  Anyone knows a Puig can beat a horde of Vikings.  Dad 2, son 0.

Round 3

Jurickson Profar base card vs. Anthony Rizzo.  He didn't even argue about this one.  Score one for the Rangers.  Score one for Dad.  Dad 3, son 0.

At this point I'm starting to feel a little guilty because he's insisting that I take the packs for the rounds I've "won".

Round 4

Taylor Guerrieri refractor vs. Kris Medlen black bordered mini.  Hey, mini-me finally scores a pack.  Dad 3, son 1.

Round 5

Somehow, I messed up the scan, so you'll have to take my word for what we pulled.  I had a gold parallel of David Price from Platinum and he pulled a Venus insert.  I let him win the argument that a planet beats a Ray. Dad 3, son 2.

Round 6

Kyle Zimmer Cutting Edge Stars vs. Josh Hamilton mini.  I knew as soon as I saw the Hamilton mini that he won the pack.  My son is 11 and doesn't have any of the cynicism of an adult so Hamilton was his favorite Ranger and still remains one his favorite players. As he looked at the Hamilton, he said, "Dad, someone wrote on the back of this one."  He handed it over.

I looked at it closer.  Then I flipped it over...

Boom!  Holy cow.  I told him what he had...an A&G Bats back mini, hand #'d to 25.  These are inserted 1:272 packs in retail and he pulled one of his favorite player!

I pushed all the packs at him and said when you get a card that good, you automatically win the war, every single pack included.  He was so happy and I got a big kick out of the smile on his face.

Just for the sake of doing it, we opened our last two packs to see what would have happened.

Round 7

Tim Lincecum Ruby parallel vs. Andre Eithier Across the Years.  I hate to pick a Giant over anyone, but it's a 1:20 insert so we gave the win to me.

Round 8

"Michael" Stanton Best Bowman Players of All Time insert vs. Will Clark base card.  C'mon, this is a no brainer.  Giants uni or not, Will is my favorite player and my son knows it so this round went to him.

Overall, we ended up tied 4 packs apiece, but I gave him all the Platinum cards to go with his Ginter cards based on the excellent Hamilton mini.

I have to say, incredible pull or not, this was a lot of fun and I'm sure we'll be doing it again soon.  Maybe when Chrome comes out because everyone knows I love some shiny goodness.

The Gint-A-Cuff video

I'm posting the box break video for my Gint-A-Cuffs box.  It's a crappy video and I hate the way I sound on it.  I'm just posting it to show my box.

A couple of things from the video.

I noticed the I scored the black bordered sp mini I pulled early on incorrectly  After watching the video I went and checked and I gave myself 2 points instead of 6.  I'll fix that.

Also, I commented on the video that I was almost 2/3 of the way through the box when I was only 1/3 through the box.  Chalk that up to being distracted by the camera.

I used the word "stoked" when I pulled the rip card.  I used it several times.  I'm mortified because I don't ever say that and it sounds really stupid.

I'm not leaving this video posted forever because it sucks.  So watch it (please don't) while you can.
