Did you do it today?

Not IT, it!

No, did you enter the December contest today?

Don't forget to enter every day through Sunday.

Planting Seeds Update

A few days ago I mentioned an idea I had to plant some seeds to "grow" future collectors. That original post can be seen here.

Yesterday was my first planting day.

I made up 30 team set bags with 25 cards in each one. I slipped a couple of relic cards and a couple of autographed cards into ramdom packages. I cleared it ahead of time with my son's teacher and he went to school with 10 of the packages. He passed them out just before the end of the school day, per our agreement with the teacher. He only gave them to some of the boys in his class.

In the 10 minutes it took for the students to be released and me to pick him up in front of the school, he had "at least 10" more kids from other classes ask for cards, including one girl. I expected the word to spread, but not that fast.

I'm going to send the other 15 pack with him today. Due to my huge garage sale a few years ago and all the trading I've done the last year, I don't have a ton of extra cards, but I'm going to spread the cards around as much as possible. Sometime in the new year, I'll start looking for some cheap lots of cards to pick up to we can keep planting seeds.

I'll give you another update soon. Thanks for all the emails and comments supporting our little "farm".

Checking the Tote Board

I grew up watching the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. In our small town, we used to go door to door collecting money in cans for Jerry's Kids. We would watch the telethon and wait for those tote board updates.

Well, I'm here to update the MCG Tradeathon Tote Board. I have one more trade set up for Thursay (I think) and then I'll be getting down to the business of trading all the cards I've acquired. Feel free to email me if you're interested in getting involved. You can check out the original post here.

First up, I made two trades with people outside the Tradeathon. These were both offers that I couldn't resist and they added additional cards to our pool.

I traded a 1986 Pete Rose for two cards: a 1976 Dennis Blair and a 1987 Pete Rose.

The second trade netted 6 cards for a 2009 Mariano Rivera. I was offered, and quickly accepted, a 2002 Alfonso Soriano, 2005 Bronson Arroyo, 2005 Grady Sizemore, 2006 Adam Dunn, 2007 Michael Young and 2007 Cleveland Indians Team Card.

Now for two more entries in the contest.

Derek, from Tomahawk Chopping-Cardboard and More threw is hat in the ring. In exchange for the dreaded 2007 Kris Benson, he sent the following:

1972 Roger Repoz

1980 Baltimore Orioles Team Card
1986 Dwight Gooden All-Star

Next up was the one and only Collective Troll. I sent him a 2006 Adam Dunn and he sent the following:

1979 Joe Niekro
1983 John Tudor
2005 Hank Blalock

According to my sketchy accounting, that makes 68 cards in the lot. There might be a couple of additional cards that I've unlocked in the days since we started. I'm hoping to get one more trade done Thursday afternoon if it works out for a certain person and any others that might want it before then.

I've got an idea for the randomization that I'll run by all the entrants before I do it.

The December Contest

This is it.

The final monthly contest of the year. Shocking I know, but it is December.

I've been trying to decide the best type of contest to hold. I'm not smart enough to crack a code, so developing one is out of the question. A trivia question could work, but might be easily answered (thanks internet!). Guessing a number, a team, my favorite Will Clark card...all possibilities.

However, I think I want to make this as easy as possible, but get a record number of entries. There isn't any easier way to enter a contest than to make a simple comment. It doesn't have to be about this blog, your blog, cards, sports, or anything is particular. The word "comment" or "in" or whatever other clean word you can think of will be just fine.

So there, no research, no thinking, nothing special. No blog pimping is required, you don't have to be a follower and you don't have swear never ending allegiance to the Texas Rangers. The catch is I'm leaving the contest open until Sunday night at midnight. You can enter once and only once per day and it has to be on this post. That gives everyone up to 5 chances to win. Oh, and entries will only count for that day so you can't wait until Sunday and enter 5 times. I know, what a jerk right?

The prize: A rack-pack of something baseballish and something else that falls in line with your collecting goals.

The winner will gain the final spot in the year-end contest in which someone will win something fabulous and unimaginably great (or something less so, but still nice).

Good luck!

An Other Worldly Pyramid

No, it's not a sci-fi movie. It's a contest. Over at The Other World. You can win a whole box of cards! Go...enter...and don't win, because I want too!

Dear Topps...or Upper Deck...or Panini...or...

It's past time for card manufacturers to start paying attention to collectors. Putting together panels is nice, soliciting opinions is swell, but if they don't DO something with the information they get, it's all for naught.

This is not where I start spouting off all the things that need to be done to fix what I perceive to be wrong with the hobby. If I had some cure-all, I'd be trying to get a job at one of the companies and more importantly, that's a whole other post. I'm actually just taking a look at the comments from my "What will you collect in 2011?" post.

Eighteen people commented on the post, which is pretty good for a non-contest post. There were 68 page views according to Blogger Stats. Here is a break-down of the comments. Keep in mind that some people have several goals in mind for 2011, so there are more than eighteen items of interest. I'll include my own plans as well.

2011 Products
A&G--7 people are interested, including one who "may drop serious coin". NachosGrande bought a case last year and I'll bet he does again this year. That's a break worth watching.
Topps Flagship--5 people are interested. That's not many and one of the main complaints is the high number of inserts Topps uses now.
Heritage--only one for certain. Bad news for Topps.
Football and Hockey were also mentioned by one waxy Canuck.

Vintage
Six people said they want to either go or continue in the vintage direction in 2011.

Team Stuff
Seven people said they would be concentrating on team collections, many buying only team sets of new products. That's an after market purchase and puts little or no money in the manufacturer's coffers.

Older Boxes
A surprising six people said they wanted to start or continue purchasing older boxes. This also puts no money in the company pockets and just proves that people know if you can get past the new card hype, you can get some really good prices.

Singles/PC stuff
Four people said this was one of their goals for 2011.

Undecided
A couple of people said they weren't sure how their purchases would go for 2011. I think that's appropriate. Take 2010 Bowman for instance. Once Strasmania hit, there were probably many people who bought Bowman that normally would not spend a penny on prospecting.

As for me, I like to buy at least a few packs of everything that's new, just to see it for myself. However, if the comments on the above post are any indication, this may be a seriously down year for big card companies.

They can all take steps to change that. Better designs, better photgraphs, better designs...did I say better designs yet? They can also...oh wait, I said that was for a different post.

In case you missed it...

I know we've been in holiday mode for a few days or for the last week if you're lucky.

If you've read these two posts, I'm not trying to beat you over the head with them, but I'm hoping to get a little more feedback on these.

This one only got 16 page views according to Blogger Stats. It's about an idea I'm going to try over the next couple of weeks.

This one got 29 page views and garnered 10 comments. I'm going to use the feedback in a post later in the week, so get your comments in if you feel so inclined.

Thanks for reading and welcome back to reality.

I know, I know, but don't be mad at me, blame the calendar.
