Anyone up for a Game?

Everyone likes to play games right?  I didn't know about these 1968 Topps Game cards when I started collecting in 1981.  I remember seeing some over the years, but didn't think much about them because they didn't look like anything I'd ever seen.

Sources tell me they were issued as a 33 card set that came in complete boxed sets and were meant to be used to play a game.  Now that I know more about them, I might need to complete the set.  I picked up these four from my old LCS friend.  They were just in a random box and I got them for practically nothing.

I can take a Giant in my collection if it's vintage.  Or Will Clark.  I do think it's appropriate that this Giant Mike McCormick is a Strike Out.

Good old Richie Allen is a Line Out with runners unable to advance!

My man Al Kaline at least brought the runner home!

Of course, I had to have these when I saw Carl Yastrzemski.  Yaz was one of the players I collected early on because he was a well established star when I started.  He looks so young there!

When I get around to updating my want lists, I'll add this set to it.  It should be another fun one to go after.

  1. If you decide to chase the set, let me know. I'm only two cards from completing it and I have a few dupes from some lots I've picked up along the way. Condition isn't perfect, but they're available.

  2. I really, really like this set. At first glance, they kinda seem plain. But they remind me of the 1951 Topps cards... so they really have that vintage appeal. Plus there are some solid names on the checklist. I picked up this set back in December for under $40, so it's a very affordable set to put together. Best of luck with it. If you're like me, you won't be disappointed.

  3. I've got this set and some doubles. Got to put everything together to make sure I STILL have a full set. Some of them are in my piles of "cards to blog about" that never seem to get talked about.

  4. i know i've got a couple of tommy davis cards from the set that are extras, plus the lone dodger, claude osteen. topps put a hatless davis in the set, and folks likey figure him to be a dodger even though he was long gone by then.

  6. I don't know about "complete boxed sets", but 1 of these these cards came in each 5-card pack in 1968 (only during the 2nd and 3rd series, I think).

I have had the complete set since 1968, and discovered a few years ago that I had many duplicates. I made 2 posts awhile back about them on my 1968 blog:

  7. I have some dupes as well. I played a 9 inning 'game' with these a while back and blogged the results. The NL won, 8-6

  8. I completed this a few years ago. It was fun, and wasn't too tough. Lots are the way to go. The Mantle was tough, but if you're willing to sacrifice condition, it's pretty obtainable.
