Back in action

Let's start this post off right by saying Happy Flag Day.

I'm back from my vacation. It wasn't a real vacation even though I was off work.

I missed out on a few things last week.

The debut of one Mr. Strasburg comes to mind. You already know the stats from his first two games. Let's go ahead and put him in the Hall of Fame.

Maybe we'll hold off on the induction ceremony for a year or 20. Night Owl had a pretty nice post about one Karl Spooner who had a better start to his career than Strasburg. Unless you've already read Night Owl's post (and you should have) then you probably don't know who Spooner is and I hope Strasburg fares better than Spooner. I'd put a link to the post, but blogger is being cranky.

A more recent bout of hype surrounded this guy.

I used to have a ton of Mark Prior's rookie cards. They were sure to put my kids through college, even though he didn't get quite the hype Strasburg is getting. Anyone know where Prior is today?

I'm not bagging on Mark Prior. I'm sure he just tried the best he could. It's not like he and Spooner wanted to be injured. I'm also not blaming Stephen Strasburg for the hype and hysteria his debut has created. It's not his fault that Topps committed a major marketing blunder with the MCG website and the card pictured above. I even commented on a recent Cardboard Junkie post (again, no link thanks very much Blogger) saying I didn't want to buy any more Topps products. Really, who am I kidding. First of all, that is shortsighted. Every card blogger in the world isn't going to make much of a dent in Topps sales or rep by not buying or writing about their cards. Let's face it: TOPPS DOESN'T CARE ABOUT US! Sorry if that hurts your feelings. I couldn't care less about how many card roundtable Q & As Topps has letting "us" give our input and opinions. Face facts...they don't give a flying you know what. They are going to continue churning out products hoping to hit a winner like Ginter and they'll eat it up when a guy like Strasburg comes along. Don't think for a minute they aren't drooling all over themselves about Bryce Harper. Nothing would make them happier than to see Harper in a Nats uni next week.

I don't wish failure on Strasburg because I don't like him. It's only human to want to see someone succeed. I hope he goes on to a Hall of Fame career and makes all those people spending unbelievable amounts of money on his cards look like geniuses. But that doesn't happen very often. It's more likely we'll see him follow in Mark Prior's footsteps rather than Nolan Ryan's.

That was what we call a tangent. My original point was that I will still be buying Topps cards. Not just because they are the only game in town. I could just spend my money on vintage cards. Maybe I should, but I like Ginter, I even like the 2010 Flagship set. I love the MCG idea, even if they did pervert it somewhat by introducing the SP Strasburg. I'll just lump that in with all the other gimmicks and not worry about getting it for my set. If I end up with one, great. If not, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Well, there were other things that happened last week, but at this point, who cares.

I did get three packages in the mail while I was gone and I still need to send Kerry his prize for the June contest.

It's nice to be back. Even if nobody knew I was gone.

The Ultra Keeping Your Eye on the Ball Clinic

Today we'll show why hitters keep their eye on ball. It helps you to make good contact and good things happen when you make good contact.

2003 Ultra Nomar Garciaparra--You'll notice the head is down all the way through contact with the ball.

Example #2. 2002 Ultra Cal Ripken Jr.--Cal looks to have made good contact, good enough to drive in that runner at third.

2003 Ultra Manny Ramirez--The result of keeping your eye on the ball as it hits your bat is you can keep your eye on the bat as it clears the left field wall for a homerun.

2002 Ultra Brian Giles--That leads to the homerun trot. Or maybe Brian Giles is happy that I'll be back from vacation tomorrow. Who knows?

Play at the Plate 21: Eight Men Out Special

Due to vacation last week, we'll be going with this Eight Men Out play at the plate I pulled from one of those awful $20 re-pack blasters they sell at Wally World. It was the same blaster I used for a contest a long time ago.

The back of the card reads:

"Game Five, Comiskey Field. Heine Groh (that's a name for you GSNHOF) races in from third on Felsch's error, Schalk catches the throw at the plated and dives at the sliding runner. The Umpire spread his arms wide 'Safe.'"

It also informs us that Gordon Clapp is portraying Ray Schalk.

I should be back to normal posting Monday. Or not!

**This post was sheduled sometime last week**

Catchers are cool

If you've read more than one of my posts, you know I like catchers. No really, it's true.

Catchers are tough. Catchers take foul tips, wild pitches and sometimes even broken bats to all parts of the body. They have to protect the plate when people of all sizes and shapes are bearing down on them.

Case in point, this amazing 1991 Topps Carlton Fisk card with Cecil Fielder, yes big Cecil, coming in for the kill. (Image borrowed from Night Owl--go read this post now)

Let's continue my vacation celebration with a few Ultra cool catchers, some doing what catchers do, some just looking good doing nothing at all.

2002 Ultra Ivan Rodriguez--Ultra Cool

2002 Ultra Brook Fordyce--He's no Pudge, but that's a nice card.

2002 Ultra Bradon Inge--Here we have a young Inge, demonstrating how NOT to use the leather.

2003 Ultra Ivan Rodriguez--They got the color schemes to match the team colors that year and that is one nice card. Pudge may be in a PED induced trance, but he sports the tools of ignorance well.

2003 Paul Lo Duca--Say goodbye to the nice readers Paul.

Have a great weekend everyone!

First Chicle Packs

I don't care how you pronounce it, I was just happy to find some Chicle packs. I actually found these last week before vacation, but I waited to show them until today. You didn't think I was ONLY going to shedule posts about Ultra cards while I was away did you?

I've seen and read just about every kind of opinion you can have on these cards. Some of the artwork is just weird looking and some is amazing. Overall I like the cards and I LOVE the on-card autos. I had the Rangers in Joe Collectors June Break and he busted two boxes of Chicle. I should be able to see the Neftali Feliz auto he pulled as soon as I get back home.

I bought one blaster of Chicle at Target. It had 8 packs with 6 cards each.

Here are some highlights and lowlights of the cards I pulled.

Pack 1:

Joe Saunders
Mark Teixeira
Kurt Suzuki
Scott Feldman--National Chicle Back--A parallel of a Ranger...that's nice

Nick Markakis
Russell Martin--This is a really nice card.

Pack 2:

Pee Wee Reese--I like this one.

Stan Musial--One of my favorites so far.

Ryan Howard
Cole Hamels
Whitey Ford
Rogers Hornsby--SP I have to admit, when I scanned these I didn't know which ones were short prints. Otherwise, I might have scanned this one. Umm....no, I wouldn't have. It's not as nice as the other two.

Pack 3:

Tim Wakefield--Wow, that is BAD. All caps BAD.

Brandon Inge
Zach Greinke
Kendry Morales
Eric Young Jr.
Johnny Mize

Pack 4:

Frank Robinson
Reid Gorecki
Chris Coghlan
Henry Rodriguez--On card autos are really nice! Thanks Topps!! The odds for this were 1:157.

Robin Yount

Luis Aparicio

Pack 5:

Tobi Stoner--This pack didn't have much to scan.

Dan Haren
Mark Buehrle
Brad Hawpe
Paul Molitor

Alex Gordon

Pack 6:

JD Drew
Johnny Damon
Jason Kubel
Drew Stubbs--SP-- SP rhymes with ugLY. Sort of.

Dan Uggla
Lou Brock--Sweet Lou!

You'll notice that I only listed 6 of 8 packs. I sent one pack each to Dan at The Other World and Zman over at Autographed Cards as part of their prize pack for winning the First 10 Game winner and First Manager Fired contests. I got all the expected "hits" out of the box except one Bazooka Back (1:8) packs. Hopefully one or both of them will get something good in their packs.

I'll definitely be looking to buy more of this...but I need to buy a box of A&G for the Gint-a-CuffS!!

The Ultra Homerun Stealing Clinic

Young ball players take heed. Today we have some fine examples of how to steal a homerun from an opposing hitter (or at least take away extra bases).

2002 Ultra David Justice

2003 Ultra Carlos Beltran

2002 Ultra Ichiro

Those are some might fine photos even if Justice is wearing a Yankee uniform.
