What is your favorite...?

What is your favorite Topps set of all time?

Why is it your favorite?

I have an affinity for the 1981 Topps because that was the year I started collecting and it will always be my first experience with Topps. That seems to make Johnny Bench happy.

I recently started working on the 1973 set. It seems obtainable and the photography is quirky. There are some nice play at the plate cards too, not to mention this cool Thurman Munson card.

Thanks to the Topps MCG site, I've been able to obtain a few 1956 cards (not this one...yet). I have to say this is one of my favorite sets ever. There are quite a few great play at the plate cards. I'll start picking these up when and where I can, but it won't be easy or cheap to complete. I'll probably never complete it, but it will always rank right up there as a favorite and it should be a thrill every time I can pick one up.

So, what about you? What's your favorite Topps set?

  1. My favorite set is Topps 1970, which like you, was the first set that I really collected. I know it doesn't get much praise for its boring gray design, but to my eight year old eyes, its a thing of beauty.

  2. 1972 Topps because of its design - though the 2008 set is growing on me as it mimics the 1972 design.

    But you knew that already.

If I was born 20 years earlier, it would be '56 Topps. It's my second favorite now.

  4. 1967 Topps. It was one of the first I collected as a kid. It has a great, simple design and a bunch of awesome players.

  5. 1967 is my favorite design. 1987 is my favorite of the ones I actually collected.

  6. I like all of the sets you have listed here, but one set that I really like is the '84 Topps set. I haven't started building this set in earnest yet, but it's on my to-do list.

  7. 1960, 1965, 1975, 1983, 1995 -- They are the best looking and/or funnest to my eyes. 1973 be growing on me of late too. 1972 gets an honorable mention too for being one of the direct inspirations for a piece of art I did back in the day.

  8. I'm going to jump on the 1967 bandwagon with Hackenbush and Paul. It's the first set I collected, the photography is clean, and the design is simple. IMHO, extreme designs and colors like the 1972 (which I have) and 1975 sets only detract from the photos.

  9. I am going with the 1979 set. I love the Nolan Ryan card from that set.

  10. I like the 78 set because it was the first one that I collected, and the second one that I ever completed. I really like the looks of the 83, as it just stands out in comparison to the year before and the year after.

  11. I write a blog covering the 1973 Topps set, but the one that got me started was 1979 Topps. If the photography in that set was a wacked-out, I'd likely be blogging about that one, too.

  12. I started collecting with the '79 set, but by far my favorite was the design of the 1980 set. Between the ribbons for the position and team and the blue backs with cartoons, how could you go wrong with that set. Someday I'll own the 1980 set.

  13. I have to agree with the 1973 set. Last Clemente, Mays as a Met. Aaron, Bench, Reggie, Kaline, it goes on and on.

  14. 2001 for me. I bought lots of boxes and packs and completed a few sets. I just generally had a good time working on the 50th anniversary set and I thought the base and inserts were great at the time. Plus that was Ichiro's first Topps RC, and that was a big one at the time.

  15. 1975 Topps. I had the complete set as a kid but fell into the trap of mom cleaning out my stuff and tossing most of my cards. The 78 set has a special spot too because the only cards left from my youth are about a hundred or so of them that mom missed.

  16. 1953 Topps.

now back in reality of some set I might be able to finish. A tie with 1975 Topps and my half finished 1971 OPC set. (it's close enough, right?)

  17. 1987 Topps, the wood boarder is such a persistent memory from when I was six years old and getting my grandfather to buy my brother and I packs.

  18. I have to say it's my first set ever... 1987. I still get excited whenever I see the wood grain and the Bonds, Jackson and other rookies in the binder!

  19. I'm going with 1955 Topps, though there's a special place in my heart for the awesomely bad 1992 set, which introduced glorious gold parallels.

  20. There are a couple...the 1972 and 1975. The '72 border to me is sweet!! The 1975 set for different reasons....I like the 2 tone colors but when I was a kid, I don't know if it was the Detroit area or Michigan, but we were a test market for the mini set. Unfortunately I didn't by a lot of packs then because they were smaller and I didn't like it. If I only knew then what I know now!!!

  21. My favorite is 2008. I'm trying to get the whole set signed, so that's one reason. I also like the different colored circles that spell out the team name. The pictures aren't the greatest, but it's still my favorite.

  22. The 1971 Topps set is my favorite. 1987 Topps is a close second because it was the first set I collected.

  23. i would say 2007, the year i started buying baseball cards.

  24. I have to say '88, for some reason I saw far more of that as a kid than I did any other set. It's kind of strange though, as I was only 4 in '88.
