On the DL

Well, my most favorite player in the history of baseball went on the DL today.

He led off of third as the catcher threw back to the pitcher and when the pitcher failed to catch the ball, he broke for home. It was going to be a close PLAY AT THE PLATE! The catcher caught the ball, but he slid safely into home to score his second run of the game.

Unfortunately, when he slid, my son, my first born baby boy, snapped the tibia in his left leg when his foot hit the plate. I raced out to the field and tried to comfort him while we waited for the paramedics to arrive. Fortunately, a couple of guys who work for the league are paramedics and they helped while we waited.

It was a long, hard day at the hospital. Initially, the paramedics thought he broke his leg AND dislocated his ankle because of the angle the foot was laying. Fortunately that wasn't the case and at this point it looks like no surgery will be required.

We're at home with a splint from ankle to mid-thigh and we'll be calling the ortho to see about a cast in the morning. He's done for this season, and sadly, says he never wants to play baseball again. I'm hoping that's the misery and pain talking, but we'll see.

If you're the praying type, he (and we) could use them. Thanks and I'll get the April contest randomized when I get back to work in a day or three.

  1. Ouch! Let's hope he has a speedy and uneventful recovery. I guess that means he'll have some cool stories to tell.

  2. My sympathies. How old is your boy? Wanting to quit is probably just a knee-jerk (no pun intended whatsoever) reaction to the pain.

I was playing first base in softball several years back and got hit in the face by a screaming liner that I misjudged. I swore right then and there I was done with the game for good. Two weeks later I was back in there plugging away.

  3. Hang in there, all will be fine and I am sure he will want to play ball again when he feels better. As a parent who has made many ER visits, an emergency dentist visit, and a couple of surgeries with my kids, it always seems worse then it is and all will be fine.

  4. Ouch! Hospital trips for your children are the most wrenching moments ever. I feel for you.

I'm sure he'll be back to playing baseball when he can.

  5. So sorry to hear this; your family will be in my prayers.

It was just about two years ago that my 9-year-old broke his arm and ended up on the DL. Lots of prayers and rehab got him back on the field in about six weeks.

One thing that really picked up his spirits was the packages of cards he got from various bloggers. The generosity of the blogging community was overwhelming.

I'd love to send your son some cards. Is there a team/player in particular he is interested in? E-mail me if you're interested.

  8. We'll be keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers! I know what it's like to have that kind of an injury as I've experienced something close to the same! He'll need some "cheer up" contents. Where can we send them to?

  9. Yowch!

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and that he doesn't put down the glove and bat for good.

  10. Dude, that sucks! Hopefully he'll get better soon, chocolate milk always helps me!

Oh, and tell him that if the girls ask what happened, to make sure he's got a couple good stories in line. Fought a shark, saved a new born from a burning building, etc.

  12. Dude,I totally feel your pain. Goose just came back from 8 weeks off with a broken foot. He missed all but 3 games of his first HS soccer season. Then just the second game back in his club season, he rebroke the same foot. Now he's most likely gonna need surgery. Sucks big time! I hope your son doesn't give up an baseball though. Just tell him to hit home runs and he won't have to slide!

  13. Not sure how I missed this earlier, but best wishes you your son! I broke both my tibia and fibula playing baseball, and can tell you it hurts like hell.

Make sure he takes it easy making his big comeback, and doesn't rush it. Some people (like stupid me) try to play soccer 3 weeks after getting a cast removed, and end up doing things that hurt worse than breaking bones, like ripping a muscle or something.

You'll both be in my thoughts, and good luck with everything!
