One of the things I like about sifting through the boxes at the home of my former LCS buddy is finding stuff I've never seen. On a recent expedition I found and brought home a couple of cards that fit that bill. One of them looks pretty good, the other not so much.
This is a 1998 Dugout Axcess Greg Maddux 7th Inning Sketch card. Aside from the fact that it looks like Maddux is farting the 7th Inning Sketch onto the card, I like it. Someone playing with photoshop added some brushstrokes to a photograph and voila, you have a sketch card. That's the good card.
Now for the bad. I have immense respect for Tony Gwynn. The guy could flat out hit. However, this card makes it look like Tony Gwynn had the ass of a hippo. I know Tony was changed over time, but give me a break. If Tony had brought civil action against the fine Axcess folks, I think a judge would have ruled in his favor. I think the problem is the brush strokes on his right leg. It widens his leg so much it looks more like a Giant Redwood trunk.
I guess 1 out of 2 isn't bad. These two will be headed to Jon at Community Gum if they weren't already in the package I mailed last week.
Not flattering. In fairness, though, by 1998 it was going to be difficult to be flattering to Gwynn's figure. (I say this out of love, about a fellow fat dude.. albeit, in his case, a word-class athlete).
ReplyDeletetony gwynn DID have the ass of a hippo.
ReplyDeleteNever seen those cards before. (I say that every time I see cards from the late 90's.)
ReplyDeleteGwynn does look 500 lbs on that card. Ass of a hippo is the perfect way to describe it.
