Should I break this up?

I got a good news/bad news call from my LCS buddy the other day.  I'll expound on that tomorrow because I have no time this morning.

I did pick up something cheap on my last visit.

That's a 2000 Fleer Tradition Glossy Set.  They made 10000 of these and this one is #636.  Each set came with one Lumberjack bat card and 5 serial numbered Rookies.  This one has no bat card and no serial numbered rookies, but it's a complete base set of 450 cards.  I'm debating whether I should keep the set or break it up to mail out to my team collector buds.  Leave a comment telling me what to do with my Glossy set.  Yea, I just opened that can of worms.

Also, if anyone needs any 2011 or 2013 Topps Chrome or Allen and Ginter, let me know.  I'm doing some sorting and have a box full of dupes from these two sets.

  1. tough decision. The set collector in me says "Don't Do it". The team collector in me says Yeah break it up in sets. Ultimately it is up to you. It seems to me you are mostly a Rangers collector and not really much of a set collector so the set wouldn't end up as PC anyway. Or you could tuck the set away for a little while and use it as the grand prize for a cool contest.

  2. I call the Griffeys!

But no, you shouldn't break it up.

  3. I call the Braves, LOL. What is more important, that set (not factory sealed anymore) or what you can trade for with the non Rangers?

  4. if you're not going to put that set in pages so you can browse through it and enjoy it every blue moon.... then break it up.
if you will, then keep it and enjoy it.

    1. I agree with Captain Canuck. Hard to enjoy cards that are stuck in a sealed box.

  7. I'd take the cards out, look through them, and see if they grab you enough viscerally, intellectually, emotionally -- whatever makes your collecting tick. If you really like the cards then, I say keep them.

If not -- if they are just more cards that you would have on a shelf -- then bust them up. If you go that route, I'm always up for Brewers.

As Night Owl said, think of the children.

  12. It IS up to you. But missing the bat and rookie cards probably distracts from the value anyway. Of course, it has nothing to do with me being interested in the Tribe cards !!
