The trouble with vintage

I'll apologize right from the top for not giving you any vintage to look at in this post.  I wish I had some "new" vintage to show off, but that leads to my problem with vintage.

I don't shop online for cards.  It's a choice based on the trouble I got into in the past.  I haven't been to a card show in over 10 years.  The only shop in my area doesn't have a dime box, a quarter box or even a dollar box.  He does have a Beckett and he follows it religiously.

Those three things severely limit my access to buying vintage cards.  Yesterday I asked you guys to tell me to stop buying 2013 blasters because I really don't need to waste the money.  I'd rather go buy $20 worth of vintage.  If I could find it.

I've heard of a card shop in Arlington, Tx that's pretty good for boxes, but I'll have to check them out for vintage cards.  I just need to find an excuse to drive all the way over there.

  1. When we visit the in-laws in Richardson, I usually make a trip to Nick's. I think he may have a $1 box for vintage but it's filled with Commons. Nice Store, Nice product, Beckett prices, I've never purchased anything other than packs and supplies from him so I don't know if he negotiates.

  2. Try Craigslist - I search the term "baseball cards" every day. 99% is people overvaluing their junk wax but sometimes you will get something interesting. Also check out garage sales and flea markets.

  3. both of my local shops are at least 45 minutes awy in no to little traffic.... not sure how far away this new store is to you, but go to it! Life is too short to be worried about the little things. Go! Have fun! Explore! Take the wife and buy her dinner after. Whatever.... just go.

  4. PATP - I have kept that linked post bookmarked since 2009. Your good deed admission keeps me grounded. Many thanks and blessings!

  5. If the store you're talking about is Duane's just north of Six Flags Mall then they have a substantial supply of vintage. I've been there many times. I think it's 4 guys combining their stuff in one place and when they are all there on weekends it's like a mini card show. They've got boxes, supplies, vintage, quarter bins and just about anything else. I think you'd find it worth the trip on a Saturday afternoon. If its not Duane's you're talking about then I'm clueless.

  6. Sounds like an excuse to go to Six Flags!!!! And just pop into the shop. It's funny rereading that your post from 2009, not funny haha, but I've been contemplating a post about just how similar busting packs is to gambling. And just how addictive it can be. Just like those scratchers. For a few bucks you might just hit it big.

  7. Are there no card shows in your area or are you just trying to avoid them for financial reasons? If the latter, it's seriously worth it to just bring a $20 and find someone with those delicious dime boxes or some of the older dealers that have reasonably priced vintage.

  9. I've only been to one card show this year BECAUSE IT KEEPS SNOWING! Anyways, I bring $20 and a list. I ended up with a bunch of 77's, 78's and 79's, some Bowman Red Sox propsects and a box of 1994 Stadium Club Series 1 and a box of series 2....all for $16.

  10. Hey I live in Longview, TX and I have been to Nicks in Dallas several times. He is a good dealer of vintage cards. Also there is a card show that sets up in McKinney, TX. I have not had the chance to go out there but a lot of people say it gets pretty good.

  11. Less than a year later and you've been able to pick up some great vintage cards from your friend who used to own the Card Shop.
