Play at the Plate New Year Contest Question 9

What is the best card you have ever personally pulled out of a pack?

  1. A die-cut Ripken from Pinnacle Inside, the cards-in-a-can product, which I traded at a flea market for Griffey and McGwire Rookies.

  2. I've had a few great pulls depending on your definition. I ended up turning around some Cal Ripken insert in the 90s for $100 right when he was at his most popular. And I sold a Griffey parallel from Ginter #/25 for around that much too.

I've pulled a few 1/1 plates, and a 1/1 autograph dual patch from Absolute in 2005. I also nabbed a Mariano Rivera/Jorge Posada dual auto from a pack.

All those are (or were) more valuable than my Tony Gwynn auto I pulled from Baseball Heroes, but Gwynn is one of my favorite players and that makes it my best pull.

  3. I pulled a 2012 Archives auto of Yu Darvish, which is probably my best pull ever. I've had others that were also big that did stay in my collection. which I favor over the Yu auto. Recently I pulled a 2014 Panini Classic tri-relic of Gabby Hartnett, Billy Herman, and Chuck Klein. As a Cubs fan I was pretty stoked!

  4. I pulled a Charlie Sheen Major League autograph from the 2014 Topps Archives set. I sold it for $575 and used the proceeds to buy a bunch of stuff that I wanted. I don't think I've ever pulled a really big card that actually fit into my collection, but there are a few big hits I've been able to convert into things I wanted.

  5. In terms of what it meant to me personally, I think the best card I ever pulled was a 2004 Cracker Jack Scott Podsednik autograph. He was one of my favorite players at the time (and still is) and I literally jumped out of my seat when I set eyes upon it.

  6. Well, the highest value card I've ever pulled is a Griffey auto redemption from 2012 Allen & Ginter (sold for ~450 I think). http://mycardboardmistress.blogspot.com/2012/09/2012-allen-ginter-box-4-part-1-huge-hit.html

As far as true best card, though, I'd have to say the Orel of Destiny...

  7. Johnny Podres autograph out of a rack pack at Target. It's been 7 years since then, I'm due for something to top it.

  8. It wasn't one card...I once pulled a Donruss hot pack that had the entire series of Bomb Squad inserts. All the big home run hitters from 1994. Awesome!
PS EVERYBODY...for some unknown reason, my blog is not updating on your blogrolls, so please be sure to stop by ATBATT and check out my latest blog post.

  9. 1991 Upper Deck Heroes Fergie Jenkins Autograph, back in 1991. Traded it for 2 boxes of 1991 Upper Deck Football. Yep.

  10. I pulled a Cal Ripken Jr. autograph out of a pack for a group break I was hosting. I've never been more excited to pull a card (even if I wasn't going to get to keep it). It's good it wasn't on video because I might have squealed like a school girl. I also don't remember anymore who ended up with that Ripken auto...

  13. Mike Trout ASG relic card out of a rack of 2012 Topps Update from a Target. Still got it.

  14. "Best" is subjective, of course. So I will say the Charlie Whitehurst rookie relic where it looks like he's flying.

  20. A 1/1 original relic of Mike Brumley from 2005 Topps Rookie Cup. A close second was a Carl Yastrzemski autograph that I pulled from 1990 Score in 2010.

  21. When I was about ten or eleven, I pulled an autographed Hank Aaron gold parallel from 1954 Topps Archives.

  22. '09 Signature Stars Jeter auto, '08-09 Fleer D-Rose auto, and a Japanese Red Gyarados way back in the day.

  23. It was 10 days ago : on card Nolan Ryan auto, hand numbered to 34 copies.

  24. It would have to be my 2010 Opening Day Autographs OD-MT Matt Tolbert.
I beat the odds pulling this card from a retail gravity fed box back in 2010!

  25. It was a 2002 Sweet Spot Joe DiMaggio auto with "Yankee Clipper" inscription. Man I wish I still had that card!

  26. I rarely buy modern packs. The two years I bought A & G boxes for Gint-a-Cuffs I pulled nothing of interest.

My most memorable pack pull came on the playground of St Mary's School in 1964 when I found the only Mickey Mantle card any of us had seen that year. We were convinced Topps put George Altman in every pack and didn't release the Mantle card in the NY area on purpose.

  27. I really don't pull good cards. Ever. It's amazing, really. I did pull a Starlin Castro All-Star relic #'d to 60 once.

Pretty sad that's the best I've done, right?

  28. I pulled an autographed Carlos Delgado card from a pack of 1993 Classic Best.

  29. I have yet to pull a truly amazing card. The closest, in my eyes, is a Ken Griffey, Jr. relic from a pack of 2007 Goudey. The card itself is not all that amazing, but it has been the only "special" card I have pulled that fit one of my collections. I have pulled other relics and auto cards, but all pretty much become trade bait.

  30. i've pulled two babe ruth bat cards from two different packs of topps tribute over the years. also an eddie mathews patch from 2001 topps tribute, a mickey mantle jersey from 2000 upper deck legends, a cut bill dickey auto from 2006 legendary cuts, and a couple of 1/1 printing plates (including a mantle from some topps chrome issue). i am still somewhat partial to the 2002 topps archives steve garvey auto i pulled from a pack, however..

  31. I would have to say a Gold Hologrphx (however they spelled it) of Michael Jordan. According to price guides, it booked for $80.

I was happiest though with a bat relic of Carlos Beltran I pulled a few years back.

  32. Pulled out of a pack of 2012 Topps Baseball, a dual relic of Johnny Bench and Buster Posey. Nothing else really comes close.

  33. I've never really pulled anything that is either valued at a lot or anything like a 1/1. So would probably say when I was a kid any Tom Seaver card I pulled was a high light! and still have them all.
