First Chicle Packs

I don't care how you pronounce it, I was just happy to find some Chicle packs. I actually found these last week before vacation, but I waited to show them until today. You didn't think I was ONLY going to shedule posts about Ultra cards while I was away did you?

I've seen and read just about every kind of opinion you can have on these cards. Some of the artwork is just weird looking and some is amazing. Overall I like the cards and I LOVE the on-card autos. I had the Rangers in Joe Collectors June Break and he busted two boxes of Chicle. I should be able to see the Neftali Feliz auto he pulled as soon as I get back home.

I bought one blaster of Chicle at Target. It had 8 packs with 6 cards each.

Here are some highlights and lowlights of the cards I pulled.

Pack 1:

Joe Saunders
Mark Teixeira
Kurt Suzuki
Scott Feldman--National Chicle Back--A parallel of a Ranger...that's nice

Nick Markakis
Russell Martin--This is a really nice card.

Pack 2:

Pee Wee Reese--I like this one.

Stan Musial--One of my favorites so far.

Ryan Howard
Cole Hamels
Whitey Ford
Rogers Hornsby--SP I have to admit, when I scanned these I didn't know which ones were short prints. Otherwise, I might have scanned this one. Umm....no, I wouldn't have. It's not as nice as the other two.

Pack 3:

Tim Wakefield--Wow, that is BAD. All caps BAD.

Brandon Inge
Zach Greinke
Kendry Morales
Eric Young Jr.
Johnny Mize

Pack 4:

Frank Robinson
Reid Gorecki
Chris Coghlan
Henry Rodriguez--On card autos are really nice! Thanks Topps!! The odds for this were 1:157.

Robin Yount

Luis Aparicio

Pack 5:

Tobi Stoner--This pack didn't have much to scan.

Dan Haren
Mark Buehrle
Brad Hawpe
Paul Molitor

Alex Gordon

Pack 6:

JD Drew
Johnny Damon
Jason Kubel
Drew Stubbs--SP-- SP rhymes with ugLY. Sort of.

Dan Uggla
Lou Brock--Sweet Lou!

You'll notice that I only listed 6 of 8 packs. I sent one pack each to Dan at The Other World and Zman over at Autographed Cards as part of their prize pack for winning the First 10 Game winner and First Manager Fired contests. I got all the expected "hits" out of the box except one Bazooka Back (1:8) packs. Hopefully one or both of them will get something good in their packs.

I'll definitely be looking to buy more of this...but I need to buy a box of A&G for the Gint-a-CuffS!!

  1. I am digging the Chicle too. There are some really bad ones though (ala Wakefield). I am building the set, let me know if you are gonna try to build a set, we can work out a trade to help each other out. the SP list is here: http://www.topps.com/sports/news/toppsNews.aspx?news_id=320

  2. Unfortunately, I didn't get anything great in the Chicle pack (though it was fun to open).

But, I must say that I love the on-card autos that they offer. I've been pretty lucky this year and got a Denard Span auto in the one blaster I bought and I got a Juan Francisco in one of the five packs of hobby I bought. This is probably the first set since Signature Rookies where I got more than one inserted autograph from the set. And to top it off, the Francisco card was a redemption that has already arrived.

So I've been pretty lucky on this set and I will lay off of it now. I doubt that the experience will get any better.

  3. Oh, I heard that Drew Stubbs signs TTM. You should send that card to him just for the sake of sending it to him and see if he signs it.
