900th Post...and the June Contest

I say this every time I hit a round number, but when I started this blog, I never thought I would get this far. Of course, if you take out the trade posts and the contest posts, the number drops from 900 to about 60.

Seriously, it’s a big number and I’m glad to have reached it. I hope to keep the blog going for the foreseeable future, so who knows how many posts I’ll end up with. Maybe I’ll even do another play at the plate post sometime.

I guess I really just want to say thanks to everyone, whether you’ve been with me since the beginning or you jumped on for the ride anytime between post 1 and 900.

Now for the reason you’re really here today. The June Contest.

You might think I’d have some amazing contest to coincide with post #900.

Well, you’d be wrong.

You already know I like to keep the contests simple. I also like to ask a question or two. Not difficult questions really, just for my own research. So the June contest will involve a series of questions. The first one will be at the end of this post. The rest will come next week, beginning on Monday. “Why next week Mr. PATP? Why must we wait?” Well, the real reason is that I’m going to be unavailable next week. Unavailable to blog at least. I don’t want readership to dip to zero while I’m away from the blog, so I’ll schedule a question for each day from Monday to Friday. You can answer as many questions as you want, from 0-6. You’ll get one entry into the randomizer for each question you answer. The questions will be open all week so if you miss one, you can go back and answer it later.

As always, there’s no need to publicize the contest unless you want to. It’s not required. Just have fun and thanks for following along these last 900 posts.

The prize…what can we have for a prize? A few packs of cards, the unopened variety of course, and some cards from your favorite team, player or want lists. I’ll close the contest questions after I return and do the randomization for Monday the 13th.

The first question is about commenting on blogs. Do you do it on a regular basis? What does it take to get you to comment?

Good luck and I hope you all win.

Wait, I can’t afford that.

Good luck anyway and thanks for reading Play at the Plate!

  1. I can't say I comment on a regular basis. I'd like to comment more, but just don't often have the time. Contests, however, that will get me to comment. Thanks for this one.

  2. I comment fairly frequently. It doesn't take a lot for me to leave a comment- usually it's just a "nice pull" comment and never anything too insightful. There are also some bloggers that comment frequently on my posts, so I like to return the favor to friends of the blog.

  3. I comment mostly with snarky jibes, usually with something like, Wow 900 posts, and I've been here since at least number 899...
    Way to go.
Oh, and contests almost always get me to post a comment or two.. Thanks for this one.

  4. I don't leave comments a whole lot, just when I feel that I have something positive to add to the discussion.

  5. I try to comment on a fairly regular basis. My goal would probably be a couple a day, though sometimes I fall short of that goal. If someone makes a great addition to their collection or pulls something awesomely amazing, I usually comment. And trade posts I'm involved in always illicit a comment from me.

  6. I enjoy commenting and try to do so pretty regularly.

  7. Congrats on the milestone and thanks for the contest.

I do try to comment, but I don't do it as often as I should.

I know how I feel when my posts go for a few days commentless, so I try to make sure it doesn't happen to other bloggers I read.

  8. I think I'm a fairly regular comment leaver type person. I leave a comment if the topic is really interesting, or someone asks an outright question that I know the answer too.... or sometimes if it's a really important post to the author. I hate seeing those go without comments.

But usually it's just me leaving something smart-assed.....

  9. I comment quite frequently, it really depends on how much time I have or if I feel like I actually have something to add to the conversation (although I do post my share of "wow", "haha" and "nice card").

I try to always comment if a post specifically asks for feedback, though.

  10. I usually only comment if I disagree with something or if something sparks an idea in me that I want to share.

  11. I usually comment if I think of something funny to say. But, most importantly, I always comment when it gets me in a contest.

Oh, and I didn't say "funny" as in you might think it is funny. I mean when I find it funny.

Ex: You may claim 900 posts, but I claim you have 713. Your 713th and final post was when your scanner was officially pronounced dead.

See, I find that funny...you might not...

  12. Happy 900th! I've been here since before the beginning, back when there was no blog and there was this pesky guy named Brian leaving comments on posts I wrote 11 months ago.

I comment often. It doesn't take much to get me to comment -- if it stirs a reaction, I'll be commenting. Plus, I know that others appreciate comments.

  13. I like to think I comment often, but unfortunately, I'm sure I don't comment often enough. I do pay attention to who comments on my blog's drivel and then try and return the favor over time. You know, reward the readers or something.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I don't comment as much as I should or used to, but I do try to comment at least once a day.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I like to comment of "regular" blogs, meaning blogs that I have had some other interaction with, like trades. If there is some sort of familiarity with a blogger and myself, I tend to comment on theirs more often than others.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm usually very self-conscious when commenting (example: I've rewritten this comment at least 10 times), because I don't want to sound dumb. But I know how great it is to get comments on my blog so I try to do the same for others.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I drop about 4 to 5 comments a day. people that ask questions on their blogs get more comments from me. Asking opinions is a good way to get a comment.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't comment very often, I use Google Reader and to comment I have to pull up the page and then comment, seems too much for me. I usualy only comment when it comes to contests and trades and wantlists

    ReplyDelete
  19. I comment quite frequently. Mainly for contests, or when somebody asks a question that I happen to know the answer to.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't comment often....I barely keep up with my own entries....

I usually comment when I can possibly answer a question of some kind...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I comment if something pops in my head to say and I'm not in a rush. I tend to not comment on trade posts, and I try to make a comment whenever someone asks a question, unless it's a factual question and my answer's already been said.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I always make sure to comment on contest posts! Other than that, a post really has to hit that chord to make me want to comment.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Congrats on the milestone! I still have a long way to til 900.
I only really comment on a post if I feel the post deserves a comment, such as if someone is showing off a new addition to a collection, is saying something interesting about the hobby or if someone is asking for help of some kind. Oh and I also post a comment if it means I can get in on a contest!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I try to comment on most posts that I read. It lets the bloggers know that I have been there and have something to say. However, I like to think my logic doesn't apply to my blog, as I don't receive many comments.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love getting and responding to comments on our blog, so I comment often. Interacting is the best part about blogging and I wish it were easier.

Also, I hope everyone knows that Jon and I sign our comments because two of us comment from the same account. I sometimes worry that it looks weird that I'm signing my comments- like I don't understand the technology. My mom signed her first dozen or so texts, for instance.

Anyway, great milestone! Keep up the posting (and commenting)! -Andy

  26. I try to comment on a regular basis based on time. I too try to return the favor to those who comment on my posts but it's not the only time. If somebody takes the time to write something that interests me I try to respond in kind.

Congrats on 900 and thanks for yet another cool contest!

  27. I try to comment as much as I can. Usually, I like to comment when it is a solid post, a blogger gets an awesome card or to thank a blogger for a trade.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I usually always comment on a trade post involving me as a thank you. Others I comment occasionally if I get a snarky remark or what I consider remarkable insight. What does it take? Um, well I have an opinion on just about everything. My comments are usually reserved for those opinions that I haven't worked into a post of my own for whatever reason.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I try to chime in when I can add something to the topic. Although sometimes that just means I'm the guy saying, "WRONG!" like that old guy on the porch when I was a kid who kept telling me I didn't know what lay ahead in life for me.

(Of course, he was right...and he was no longer around when I realized it).

However, on my own blogs I rarely get any comments at all. I've slowly learned to get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Congrats on the big 9-0-0!

I know I should comment more, especially since I have my own blog now. I know how much I appreciate it. I comment for sure when a contest is involved or to get a trade going, which tells me I'm quite self-serving. Otherwise, I comment when something is funny, when a post gets me angry, or when there's potential for discussion. It helps a lot when I know the blog owner will respond, will continue a discussion. That's also something I often neglect doing on my own blog.

  31. It doesn't take too much for me to leave a comment - a question posed, a general statement about the hobby or cards pulled or even a personal story.

I tend to pay special attention to bloggers I've traded with in my nearly four months around these parts - but I've left plenty of comments on other blogs too.

I know it's nice to get feedback so I try to keep that in mind when I have the time.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I comment if something reached out to me

    ReplyDelete
  33. I comment infrequently, but much of that is because Blogger doesn't play well with my WordPress OpenID on the work laptop. :(

    ReplyDelete
  34. I comment pretty often because I'm pretty new to the blogger community so I want to interact with as many blogs as possible. Also, I really enjoy positive feedback so I try to leave as much as possible.

I also plugged your contest anyways here! http://cccollecting.blogspot.com/2011/06/contest-over-at-autographed-cards.html
Hope you follow and enjoy! Congrats on 900th posts and thanks for the contest!

  35. I read more than comment, but if the subject is something I feel strongly about I won't hesitate to post.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I try to comment under two conditions:
    1) I have something funny to say.
    2) I have something meaningful to say.

Otherwise, I feel like I'm rambling...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Typically, only if I have something meaningful to add. Annoyingly to myself and others, I'll also sometimes do it to point out errors.

And, of course, to enter a contest :)

Congrats on 900, I hope I can make it that far.

  38. I find I am posting more, mostly because I have started blogging and appreciate comments on my posts. Usually, I only comment if I have something to communicate that has not been said before.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I comment on sports card blogs on a regular basis. Both to give information to the writer - share something with them, and to show that another blogger is reading their work.

There is nothing I like more then reading comments, especially from other bloggers out there.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I comment pretty regularly when I do read blogs as long as I like the card or have something relevant to say.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with TheBrooklynMet. I used to over comment though so I've been double checking myself as of late. Like I'll type something up and then think about whether it's a needed comment as I fill in the word verification thing. Crazy haha.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I comment but not too often, the reason being that I'm quite new to collecting and don't want to make myself look like a doofus.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If I see a post where I have something to say I say it. It might be 3 days or 2 weeks or 18 months after is was posted, but I'll say it.
