June Contest: Question 5

Only two left. I'm sure by this time, I'm more than ready to be home and you're ready to stop answering questions.

Today is simple. What are your collecting goals? Are you a set collector, player collector or team collector?

I've asked this question before, but I'm hoping to reach new people who weren't reading last time.

Tomorrow's "question" will be the easiest one of all.

Thanks!

  1. Set collector. It goes back to the days where I busted Topps wax when I was a kid.

Except when it comes to football. Then I'm a one-team guy.

  2. A little of both. I have refocused my collection lately. I am collecting Astros cards and I am picking 2 or 3 sets a year to complete rather than buy a bunch of packs of stuff I'll never complete. Trying to stop wasting my budget!

  3. I want to finish '76 first. My grandpa brought me home (roughly in '79 or '80) a large assortment of '76 from a garage sale in Ohio. I recently realized I wanted to complete this set first to honor him in that small way.

Then, I'll focus on '78 - my first cards. Ultimately, I'd like to complete the sets from my peak collecting years as a kid - including '79 through '83.

Since returning to the hobby recently, I decided to chase some of my ol' favorite players (and a couple of new) for player collections.

  4. I've got three main areas: Tino Martinez PC, Yankees collection, and TTM autos.

My goal for Tino is to acquire any that I do not have. I don't really have a goal for the Yanks - I just like getting new cards and seeing a lot of cool sets that I missed while I was out of the hobby. TTM is pretty exclusive to Yanks, and I try to keep a project going to keep me interested in sending out requests.

  5. I am mainly a set collector. I am trying to complete Topps sets from my birth year to current, and complete the sets I collected as a kid. I am also trying to collect cards of the Tigers as a run across them, especially the oddballs and lesser known issues.

  6. in a word, Yes. I collect 5 teams. Trying to concentrate on the Opening Day sets, and the main players I colect all wear the #7 jersey with Mr. Mantle being chief amongst these. And the answer to tomorrow's question must be 42.

  7. I am a team collector. Base cards and parallels of all Red Sox.

I also have a one man Player Collection, Bill Virdon.

  8. I'm an extremely unfocused collector. I want to complete every set I start, including the rest of a rare insert set if I get even one, but I realize that's not possible in my budget. In the past I would buy a pack every week of a different product, and the ones I really liked would get an encore in subsequent weeks. Now I'm more into trying to complete the Topps sets, including any inserts I really like but that aren't extremely rare (e.g. Kimball Champions).

So while I like the complete sets, I'll take any current/former Cardinals I don't have as well. I also collect Ozzie Smith and Nomar Garciaparra, but those are not my main focus right now.

  9. I am little bit of all three. I collect early KC Royals/Athletics cards. I am also attempting to complete the 1975 topps set and I am somewhat working on the 1956 set. I am most passionate about my Gaylord Perry collection.

  10. Some of all 3. First a set collector. Then for the sets I don't collect, Indians cards. Then there are a few players I collect, but I'm not too aggressive about pursuing the player collections. Its more like if I buy cards for a set I'm not trying to complete (e.g. 2011 Bowman), there are a few guys that, along with the Indians, are keepers, and everything else is up for trade. Not very focused, I know, but its working (sort of).

  11. For me, it's a bit of all 3. Definitely a set builder, as I do Topps and Allen & Ginter every year, plus this year, Heritage and Gypsy Queen. I also collect Cubs cards, as well as quite a few different players.

  12. I just like to rip packs, which is priority #1. I like to try to at least have a pack's worth of cards of most products. I have player collections centered around guys I grew up with and went to school with (David Wright, the Uptons, Scott Sizemore). I also collect anything related to Virginia Tech. I am building a few sets, and I like to keep a mix of some common sets and some rarer insert sets.

  13. I'll go with player collector, mainly Hershiser, Earl Wilson, Carl Erskine and Bill Wade (football).

I've completed one set and it didn't really do much for me.

I'll also pick up whatever interests me at the moment, mostly older stuff.

  14. I'm a set collector in hockey and football. In baseball, just a team collector now thanks to the crap that's now out there.
Plus I have a few player collections over the three sports.

  15. Team collector, set collector (mostly past sets nowadays).

I player-collect a little, but not a lot because it can get kind of crazy.

  16. Set Collector? No, except Diamond Kings (duh) and a few others like Masterpieces. Having said that, I have about 20 complete sets from the 80’s that I’ve accumulated over the years. I never look at them though, they are just collecting dust.

Player Collector? No, except for Rod Carew, Wes Welker, Dennis Rodman and about 20 others. I say no because, even though I look for these players, I don’t want or even need every card of them ever produced. Just the ones I find cool.

Team Collector? No, except… well, no. For a while I was accumulating Cardinals since my son was obsessed with them, but his interest has died down.

I am the unclassifiable collector! I collect anything that looks nice, has sentimental value, is rare or has that undefined quality that grabs at my collecting heartstrings. I want it all, but then after I scrape through the masses of cards and take my favorites, I love getting the rest to people who want it. In a perfect world, I’d just have a few thousand random cards a day come in the mail. I’d go through them and take my greedy cut, then send the rest off to team, set and player collectors.

    That’d be awesome.

  17. I'm like The Diamond King in that I can't really classify myself one way or another. I have a lot of sets, so I guess I am a set collector, but I also have some player collections. And then I have my sampler collection, awards and leaders collection, Team USA, Women in Sports... I guess my core is a set collector, but there are other areas that interest me.

  18. Player collector, for the most part. Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, Russell Martin, Chad Billingsley, Al Rosen, and a host of others.

I look to put sets together on occasion (A&G), a few Dodger team sets, and a few random sets (2008 TriStar Prospects Plus, 2004 Fleer Platinum).

Also, I'll snatch up anything if it catches my eye haha.

  19. I work in all three areas with Mets and Yankees being first on my list. I do have several player collections and I build the Topps set and Opening Day set each year. I did Gypsy Queen base set this year but not the SP's, I hate short prints in base sets.

  20. Yes

While I don't collect sets these days like I did in the 90s because set collecting these days with SPs sucks, I still love putting together sets. My top priority is probably player collections and lowest would be team collecting.

  21. Team collector -- Minnesota Twins. Killer as a Senator? Nope. Joe Mauer in a minor league set? Uh uh. Justin Morneau on the WBC Canadian team? No thanks. There are already too many to collect -- gotta draw a line somewhere.

  22. Short term my goal is to upgrade some of my really ugly '59 Topps baseball. I put the set together on the cheap and got a few really weak cards in the process. Long term I plan to complete the Topps '57 set. It's another of my favorites.

Every fall I collect a card of every guy on my fantasy football team. Been doing that for 30 years. It used to be a lot harder than it is now.

  23. Player collector. It's cool to watch how the player has aged over the years.

  24. I am mostly a team collector. I also have a handful of player PCs as well. I am not into set collecting but, I love trading with set collectors.

  25. I guess I'm all.
    Rankded:
    Player - Prado
    Team - Braves
Sets-the ones I buy cards of, fun to do

  26. Sets have never really interested me enough, save for the almighty 2007 Bowman Heritage, which I'm desperately trying to finish.

I'm more of a player collector, but even more of a rookie collector. And lately I've been getting into vintage Bowman, which could turn into a very difficult goal.

  27. I'm a player collector right now. Albert Pujols. I live an hour away from a Wal-Mart and am 12 so I don't really collect much. I just pick packs that look interesting. Never really collect sets.

  28. hockey card collector--90's junk wax or expensive stuff--as long as its hockey hockey hockey hockey
    hockey hockey hockey hockey

  29. Player collector, trying to get as many James Shields as I can get my sweaty paws on. Upto over 150 different cards.Due to the cost of getting cards shipped to the UK set collecting is a bit of a no no. Also collecting Rays prospects.

  30. I am a bit of all three wrapped up in one. I collect any and all Rockies now, but I started out as a set collector exclusively because I didn't have a single favorite team before 1993. I have dabbled in player collections as well with Christian Friedrich, Fred McGriff, and Dave Parker.

This is my favorite part of the hobby, there is no one right way to do it. Everyone can go their own way.

  31. I'm a player collector. I collect about 30 specific Athletics as well as Canadian ballplayers.

There are a few sets I'd like to put together eventually, but I wouldn't say that I'm a set collector at this point.

  32. I'm a set and team collector.

Sets: All Allen and Ginter, 1992-2005 Bowman, selected sets that I like

Teams: I'm not an obsessive Phillies collector, but I will collect all I strive for....current focuses: 2008-2011, 1970-1986

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm both. That's the easy answer. I try not to chase too many sets to keep costs down as much as possible, but after I bust a decent amount of any one product, I consume myself with completing the set.

Sets: A&G, Bowman Platinum, and vintage Topps sets (68-72)

Teams/Players: Cubs, Pirates, Sandberg, Bo Jackson, Mark Grace

  34. My goal is like my mission statement on my blog. "I am trying to acquire an autograph of every person to play an inning for my favorite team, the Baltimore Orioles".

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've been a player collector my entire life. I don't think I've completed a set yet (although I'm fairly close on a few now thanks to some trades).

I collect Luke Hochevar and Dexter Fowler. I also collect Royals and Rockies by default, since those are the teams I follow because of those two players.

I also have some oddball side collections going (manupatches, mustache cards, etc.) because variety is the spice of life.

    Thanks for some great questions!

  36. Card related goals: Complete Braves team sets, complete some vintage Topps sets, complete some recent retro sets, find cool stuff.

Organizational goals: Send out cards I owe people, get my want/need lists in order, sort everything that needs to be sorted, get ready to purge a large chunk of the collection.
