Play at the Plate 4: Scott Servais vs. Jason Kendall

1998 Stadium Club Jason Kendall

April 26, 1997: Pittsburgh Pirates @ Chicago Cubs

Jason Kendall comes to the plate in the top of the third inning with one out and the Pirates leading 3-1. He hits a single to left off Kent Bottenfield. One more out brings Emil Brown to the plate. Brown laces a double to left and Kendall starts chugging around the bases. Leftfielder Doug Glanville tracks down the ball and fires the ball back toward the infield. Kendall rounds third and this is what happened next:

Kendall just beats the throw....perhaps Servais dropped the ball, but there was no error on the play...and the Pirates take a 4-1 lead. That lead would slowly dwindle as the Cubs score single runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings and win the game 7-6.

This catcher vs. catcher battle is won by Jason Kendall.

  1. Awww man, I thought for sure that Scott would win. He was one of my favorite players as a kid...for no good reason. Just a cool guy.
