Play at the Plate 27: Johnny Bench vs. Dick Green

I haven't done one of these play at the plate posts in a while. Let's fix that right now.

2011 Marquee Base Johnny Bench

October 15, 1972 Oakland Athletics at Cincinnati Reds

It's game 2 of the 1972 World Series. Ross Grimsley is facing the A's in the top of the 2nd inning. Catfish Hunter has just given the A's a 1-0 lead by singling in George Hendrick. A's 2B Dick Green is standing on second base as Bert Campaneris came to the plate. Campaneris rips a 1-0 pitch to left and Dick Green races around third as Reds LF Pete Rose comes up with the ball and fires home. Reds catcher Johnny Bench takes the throw and this is what happens next:

Green is OUT! The A's would go on to win Game 2 by a score of 2-1 and win the World Series in 7.

Thanks to Nick aka Yanks and Beans from The Cardboard Dugout for this great card!
