What will you collect in 2011?

The New Year is rapidly approaching and with it, comes a new season of collecting.

What does that mean for you? Will you be collecting everything that Topps and the others throw at us? Will you follow your same collecting patterns or change it up? Will you stick to your plans or cave in and buy everything under the sun? Are you even going to buy anything this year?

I think I'm going to buy the Topps Flagship product again. Beyond that, I'll probably enter Gint-A-Cuffs III, which will most likely be my only hobby box of the year. I'll buy a little bit of most releases, even if just a few packs, because I like to see and judge for myself. Don't get me wrong, I read nearly every blog I can to see what's being pulled and what the thoughts of each new product are, I just like to see them up close. I'm interested in Heritage this year, but no more than in previous years. I like it, but it's a tough set to build with all the SPs so I haven't finished even one yet and don't expect to do it this year either. I do want to start making some progress on the 1973 set so I'll spend a little more on vintage this year.

So what's your plan for 2011?

  1. I'll buy the Mets cards from the Topps flagship set, Pro Debut & Bowman. I will probably skip Heritage, and I'm on the fence about Ginter.

No hobby boxes unless they get discounted to around $1 per pack, no loose packs except for the $10 I spend to welcome the new baseball card season in January or February.

  2. No boxes for me this up coming year.... Work really hard on the 68 topps baseball set which i'm over 50% done with... And put together the A&G set other than that just buy single and start on the 1952 Topps set!

  3. I missed the boat on everything this year, but my PCs grew a lot and I spent 1/10 of what I did last year. I dropped a C-note on Topps Series 1 when it came out and then got 20 bucks worth of series 2 and update and wife bought me a blaster of heritage...
Next year I wanna build Topps flagship, but not mess with the insert sets. One Turkey Red set is enough for me thanks... I really just want to work on my 65 Topps set and Rays Gold Topps team sets and buy some boxes of mid 2000s product that I think looks cool like Fleer Tradition, UD Vintage or Bowman Heritage. Back to basics I guess. I did not buy a single pack of T206, Bowman, Chrome, etc and I don't plan on doing it next year. Found so many great cards on auction sites for the same price as a pack. I like that idea. Oh, and I intend to blog my ass off in 2011!!!!

  4. I think I'll try to finish off the 1973 Topps set next year. I'm about 50 cards away. I'll also try to complete a few Giants team sets and also work on 1976 Kellogg's and 1976 Hostess. I probably won't buy much of the new stuff -- just a couple of packs to see what the 2011 Topps cards look like.

  5. As of right now... I'm definitely cutting back in 2011. I probably won't buy too many boxes... and if I do... it'll be clearance stuff only. I'm probably going to drop my monthly allowance of $150 down to $100... and stick to only buying PC items.

However... I still have over a month before I make my final decision :-)

  6. Baseball? same as in 2010. nothing. except try and trade for Braves team sets. baseball has jumped the shark, and with the monopoly, it's gone to crap.

I'll do football and hockey again next year though.... probably chrome in FB and Upper Deck, OPC, and one other hockey.

  7. My unofficial goal is to complete a decade in my Mets team sets next year. I'm about half way in both the '70s and '80s, so we'll see. Also, I want to keep building my Piazza collection before he's eligible for the HOF and his prices start to rise.

  8. My plans for 2011 are I have no plans. I may go the whole year without buying more than a few packs of new stuff. Or maybe I'll get giddy over something and buy a whole bunch. See? No plans.

  9. For me, 2010 was about finding my feet while getting back into the hobby. I thought I knew what I wanted to collect, but when I got into it, it turns out I was completely off base.

So 2011, I now know what my interests are. Topps flagship set and Allen & Ginter are the boxes I'll buy. I have no real interest in Heritage except as additions to my PCs (and *possibly team collections). And 206 - what's that? I didn't even collect any of that in 2010.

Most of my focus this off-season has been building small (100-200 card) sets of past years and chasing rainbows of my four players. I suspect when the new cards come out, my attention will be back to them, but I don't think I'll drop my PCs.

It turns out I'm more of a player collector than a team collector. I'll probably just end up buying reasonably-priced team sets on eBay from time-to-time.

  10. Next year will depend a lot on the sets that come out. Will there be an innovative mid-end sert that Topps releases? My focus, as always, will be on A&G. I also think I will attempt Heritage next year since 1962 is probably my favorite vintage design. Otherwise, it will be random packs and Phillies, and hopefully, Tristar releases another Obak set.

  11. Same stuff as this year, only I plan on sticking with the guys and sets I have rather than adding and subtracting all year. That way all card money I spend goes towards the stuff I want.

And I don't really but packs (maybe 3-5 a year max), so I'll be buying online and trading!

  12. I will continue to get Padres team sets and singles to send out to get more Padrographs. I will also watch for cool stuff of Oregonians and IKE and of course any new Bip Roberts or Artie Wilson stuff that may come out.

  13. If Allen & Ginter is as nice as this year (which I really liked), I'll probably drop serious coin on it. I'm on the fence about the flagship set - if it's inundated with inserts it isn't worth it to me anymore... I gave up Heritage this year for the first time I didn't buy any packs of the set...let alone try to complete it. I probably won't try to complete next year's set unless I finally finish one of the unfinished Heritage sets that I currently have. I don't bother with Bowman ever - so it looks like it'll be older boxes for me (plus Ginter) - unless something really neat is released that we don't know about yet!

  14. Ginter and vintage. Dodgers Dodgers Dodgers.

  15. Not sure. Probably just Braves and a little bit of this and that. What ever looks cool. I don't have a ton of cash to drop so I'm just looking to by a little here and there and do some trading.

  16. I'm going after Topps Flagship as usual and maybe Allen and Ginter. Thats about it.

  17. I'll still be on my project to complete every flagship set since 1980 (currently on 1985). So I'll be really delving into some serious junk wax! I'm basically going through about a set a month, so that means I'll be around 1997 this time next year. Geez. I hope I move a little faster than that, actually.

I will buy hobby boxes of 2011 Topps like I did this year, because it's part of my project. Though I really wish they'd cut back on the inserts. Some is OK. This year I liked the Yo Momma cards, the topps million, and the tales/history of the game. I'm fine with having a parallel set, too. But there are 4 or 5 other sets per box, and the Toppstown and Attax are completely unnecessary at 1 per pack, it's a complete rip for set collectors. An insert shouldn't be one-third of the packs.

  18. I'm hoping to double my Maddux collection through purchases and trades and make a serious dent in Dempster and Marmol parallels from the past two years.
We like to review stuff on our blog, so I'm sure we'll be opening new wax as it comes up, but I'm having too much fun opening boxes from the late 90s/early 00s, so I'm hoping to bust a lot of that next year (hopefully in group break form)!

  19. I never have much money for packs since my focus is on Orioles autographs. But I would say Topps Flagship and A&G.
