Play at the Plate 12: Todd Hundley vs. Luis Gonzalez

1996 Score Todd Hundley

June 17, 1995 Houston Astros @ New York Mets 12:41 PM Start Time

We come to the top of the 3rd inning with the Astros leading the Mets 5-2. Mets pitcher Bill Pulsipher had already given up 5 runs in the first inning, including an RBI single to Houston pitcher Doug Drabek. Luis Gonzalez stepped into the batters box and 5 pitches later smacked a triple to the gap in left-center. Craig Biggio grounded out to short and Gonzalez stayed put. Orlando Miller came to bat. Miller hit the 2nd pitch to Jose Vizcaino at short and Gonzalez took off for home. This is what happened next:

Gonzalez is OUT!

At first glance it appears that Gonzalez is going to be safe, but Hundley did a great job of blocking the plate with his right leg.

Pulsipher would go on to pitch 7 innings, but the Astros would win the game 7-3.
