February Contest Part 3: Are you in or out?

Now that 2012 has made it's presence known here on the blogosphere, I'm curious where you stand on it.

Are you going to collect it like you usually collect flagship?

Are you going to ignore it all together?

Are you somewhere in the middle?

I know a lot of people were out on it before it released and I wonder if they still feel that way.

If you are going to collect the set, tell people in the comments, I'm sure some bloggers could already help you out finishing the set or getting that insert/hit you're looking for.

  1. For the first time since I returned to the hobby, I'm NOT collecting any of the flagship set. I'll try to either trade for or purchase the Barry Larkin cards in the set (a couple of basic inserts plus the relic) but otherwise I'm leaving it alone.

  2. I'm going to collect it like I normally do the flagship: grab as many Mets as possible and buy some packs and hope for an insert. I'm not a set builder. What I would like to get my hands on is one of the ring cards which seem to be the most exciting new thing in the flagship this year.

  3. i will collect the base set, and will dabble in the 1987 and possibly the gold standard (or whatever that's called) - i'll see what my blaster box yields, then make a call. but at the very least, i WILL be collecting the base set. and thanks to some odd collating, i already have a pile of duplicates for trade!

  4. I will not be collecting it. But I never collect it. I grab the few cards I want 3 years later for cheap out of dime boxes.

  5. I'll be trading for the base, inserts, and parallels of the guys I collect, as always.

The insert cards are a drop off from last year (save for the '87 minis), but the base cards are much better in my opinion.

  6. I've never collected flagship and never intend on doing so. I'm just interested in every card of the main three guys I collect. Hits, base, parallels, inserts, the whole shebang.

It's nothing personal against flagship, but I'm really only interested in Ginter and then singles of Kemp, Kershaw, Russ Martin, and the far-too-many other guys I collect.

I've got to draw the line somewhere. Plus, I love the vintage-style sets like Ginter, Heritage, and GQ far more than flagship and the like.

  7. In the past I usually buy 2 jumbos and put two sets together, but since Topps decided to make you submit 14 jumbos or 50 regular packs to get in on their wrapper redemption I'm going to only buy one jumbo and 4 extra jumbo packs and only put one set together this year. So there Topps.

  8. I'm collecting it. I've busted most of my hobby box and I'm still a little ho-hum on the design but the photography is excellent. Lotsa PATP cards in there.

I'm going to finish the set and then go after the Ripkens, and the Gold Sparkly Orioles team set. Also, Anybody got 14 hobby wrappers to trade?

  9. Out. I'll do Heritage, but that is it. Going to focus on vintage and some of the oddball sets I've started (like OBAK).

  10. In for the team set but that is it.

  11. I'm out. I'll trade for or buy a Master Team set if I can find one for a good price, hopefully less than the cost of a pack. That's my goal...

  12. I won't buy any packs but I will pick up singles. I already have the Cubs on the way. I really dig the Reed Johnson with the gulls in the picture.

  13. I'm buying a few packs, but not going after it like I did in '10 & '11. Probably buy a set sometime down the road. Looking forward to Heritage though, possibly GQ and A&G depending on finances.

  14. I've never gone after the set, but as a happy retail pack opener, I'll bust a few packs here and there and throw a few in the cart anytime I'm at Wal-Mart of Target.

  15. I'm definitely in...for me the cards aren't as bad as a lot of people have made them out to be, my only thing this year is being a little smarter with my pack purchases..

  16. I plan on grabbing the cards I want elsewhere. I haven't bought any packs yet but I will eventually. I don't plan on it, but seeing all the cards being posted is giving me an itch I might have to scratch.

  17. I have always collected the Topps flagship set and will probably do so again this year. My only question for myself is will I get close to finishing it this year (like 2009,2011) or not (like 2008,2010). I am still not sure.

As far as the Rockies go I want any and all.

  18. I'm in for the Phillies, the Mantle #7, and a few other Players I collect.

  19. I am with FanofReds, I am buying or pulling Reds cards. I am buying hobby and jumbos for hit cards and then flipping them on ebay.

  20. I will not actively collect it, might pick up a few packs here and there, but nothing serious. I will try and get as many Drew Pomeranz parallels though, his are the only cards I will actively collect for 2012 base.

  21. I'm done with current issues, and that extends a belief I held in 2011. This year, I am just going to focus on the older cards I still need (in my case, pre-1973 Topps and 1948-55 Bowman).

  22. Like I said to Chris, I'm collecting 2012 Topps. In 2017 when I can pick up a factory set for 10 bucks at a card show.

That being said I know for a fact that someone has already sent me 2012 Topps cards. And I'll probably accumulate quite a few before the year is out.

  23. I am all in - it is too much of a tradition for me. I already bought a Jumbo box which game me the whole set. Also working on the insert sets. If anyone has some for trade, drop me a line.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'll be involved in some box breaks and bust a box myself, apart from getting the Boston team set, Chris Getz & Bill Mazeroski.

I'll be involved cause it's fun & for trade bait!

  25. I'm out. Way way out. I'll save my money for an extra hobby box of A&G. That said, I may try to collect any Pirates hits from the release. They should be fairly easy to come by. Also, I think I saw a Ryne Sandberg relic. That would be a nice add as well.

  26. I sort of let my excess card budget flow to Series 1, Series 2, and especially Update since it won't be in a factory set. I'll probably buy 2-3 of the 72-card hanger packs of each series when I feel I've gone long enough to "earn" a purchase. I bought one yesterday since I haven't bought much lately. I will either try to complete the set over the next few years or buy a factory set and move all the base to my trade list.

  27. I wish I had enough organization to be able to collect sets. Needless to say, I will not be. I am planning on buying a hobby box, though.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'll buy it (in fact I just did a few hours ago), but a lot less than last year and no attempts at completing it.

Just a little burnt out on flagship. Want to do something else with cards.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I will complete series 1 and choose an insert set or two complete once I finish opening and sorting my box....I also want that Cole Hamels pin card...we'll see on series 2...strangely, 2011 and 2012 are the first Topps sets I tried to collect since 1996. The boxes have a lot in them now.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The only thing I plan to collect is the base and any inserts of Mariners that anybody would like to send me. I won't be buying any for myself though.

    ReplyDelete
  31. hopefully I'll be able to acquire the Braves through the kindness of others... but that's it.
Not chasing it again this year.

I'm waiting for "The Game Changer"

    ReplyDelete
  32. My approach is the same as most products: Minimal (if any) pack-busting, and try to pick up the Royals in trade or a team-lot on Ebay. Anybody got Royals to trade?? :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I won't be buying many packs from this set. I will get the Dodgers I need through a group break and through trades.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I won't bust this product... but not because I'm against it. I just don't bust much stuff unless it's on clearance. If I see a factory set at a reasonable price, I might grab one... but for now, I'll focus on building my 80's sets.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Only the group breaks I signed up for - for the fun - and probably a random pack or three just to open something. Someone bought me a hangar box too.

I will collect Reds, Tigers and Cubs from the set - and a few select players I like. Perhaps even "Gold Standards."

Overall, though, I'm holding back for Heritage.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I will only be buying the factory set when it comes out. It is just to cost prohibitive to me to buy boxes and try to complete the set.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1 hanger box,
    2 hobby box group break,
ZERO cards added to my collection.

    Not buying another stinking pack...

    priceless (literally)

  38. I have yet to open any 2012 Topps but will probably bust a few packs in the future for the hell of it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm in for the Yanks. That's it. Never been a set collector though.

  40. After making runs on 2010 and 2011 Topps, I'm sitting 2012 out. I also may focus on Heritage or maybe some older sets, but I won't really go after it at all this year.
