Holding the lead is "Prior"ity One

I'm not sure what to make of the Rangers signing Mark Prior to a minor league contract. He last appeared in a Major League game on August 10, 2006. Just a month ago, on 8/3, Prior signed with the Independent Orange County Flyers. He gave up one unearned run in 9 appearances, pitching 11 innings with 22 strikeouts and only 5 walks.

If nothing else, it should boost attendance at the Oklahoma City Redhawks games for awhile. I hope he can make good on some of the potential he had early in his career. He made his OKC debut on Sunday, pitching the 4th inning. He gave up two hits and no runs while walking 1 and striking out 2.

That's all well and good, but Mark Prior is not a factor going forward and his arm is not the issue right now.

The issue is the fact that Rangers are dropping like flies.

Josh Hamilton bruised his rib cage in Minnesota and he's out indefinitely.

Elvis Andrus is going to miss a day or two (possibly more at the turf in Toronto) due to hamstring issues.

Cliff Lee has already been scratched from his Tuesday start agains the Jays.

I heard the Rangers head groundskeeper may have a wicked case of turf toe....well, not really, but you get the point. It's the wrong time of the year to be having this type of stuff happen.

The saving grace is the big lead the Rangers built over the A's. They still have work to do and this week does not get any easier with 4 in Toronto and then 3 back in Arlington against the Yankees. I'll be rooting for Seattle, Boston and Kansas City for the next week or so, because I'm not mentioning the magic number until it gets to single digits.

  1. Mark Prior. Ha! Is he trying to come back again? I lose track.
