Play at the Plate 25: Mystery Solved

I recently posted this card...

I didn't know where the photo was taken so I couldn't try to figure out the details surrounding the play. Thanks to John from the Donruss 82 blog and Jeff from I am Joe Collector, I learned it was Candlestick Park. After a little research, I narrowed it down to one play that was most likely captured by the photographer.

It's July 16, 1972. The Phillies are already behind 6-1 in the top of the 4th inning. Willie Montanez singles to center off Jim Barr and advances to 2nd on a Garry Maddox error. Don Money follows with a single which scores Montanez without a close play at the plate. It appears that Dave Rader, the Giants catcher, doesn't even have the ball yet. The Phillies would go on to lose the game 10-7.

Thanks again to John and Jeff for identifying Candlestick Park.

  1. A good number of action photos from the 1972 and 1973 Topps sets were taken in Candlestick park.

  2. I count 6 players on this card and still there is a huge gap of green in the center of the picture.
