See what happens when you don't pay attention over the weekend? Your favorite team goes and signs a big name free-agent. Just like the Rangers did with Vladimir Guerrero. Of course this deal is still pending, awaiting a physical sometime today. And Vlad isn't quite the big name he used to be. I would rather have had him back in 2004 when the Angels first got him.
Still, he should be able to put up some decent numbers even if he spends a little time on the disabled list. Vlad was a Ranger KILLER over the course of his career in LA. Here a few numbers, courtesy of MLB.com.
"Guerrero was also the Rangers' arch-nemesis during his six years with the Angels. He had a career .396 batting average against them that is the highest for any opponent with at least 150 at-bats. His .461 on-base percentage was the second highest and his .666 slugging percentage was the third highest of any Texas opponent in club history. In 102 games and 389 at-bats against the Rangers, Guerrero had 73 runs scored, 33 doubles, 24 home runs and 68 RBIs. He has played 50 games at the Ballpark in Arlington and is hitting .394 there with 14 home runs, 33 RBIs and a .705 slugging percentage. That's the highest batting average and the second-highest slugging percentage of any player with at least 120 career at-bats in Texas' home park."
Hopefully he can bring a little of that Ballpark hitting with him when he's playing half of his games there. Assuming of course he can stay healthy. One can only hope.
Is anybody else ready for Spring Training!? Where hope springs eternal and nobody's favorite team is out of the race. I sure am...the sooner the better.
The Rays are in a tie for first and it looks like it will be a GREAT year! Congrats on the Vlad signing, he is a pretty big upgrade on Jones slash Bradley and he still can swing it!
